Evaluation of Management Strategies in Ningaloo Marine Park, Western Australia

چکیده
The spatial, multi-species nature of coral reef fisheries makes them notoriously difficult to manage. We have developed a simulation modeling approach to examine the effect of management options on the recreationally important tourist destination of Ningaloo Reef in Western Australia where a recreational fishery targets Spangled Emperor (Lethrinus nebulosus). The approach brings a broad range of physical, biological and socio-economic information and process understanding into an integrated framework. It also provides an effective interface with management. Model results show the effects of historical fishing mortality, localized depletion of Spangled Emperor, and the potential effect of the sanctuary zones that are closed to fishing. They also show expected recreational catches and catch rates under different projected management strategies and future scenarios regarding the evolution of the fishery. Results from the model will provide a means to assess, test and ultimately improve the effectiveness of management and monitoring strategies in the region.

Hydrodynamic Modelling of Coral Reefs:Ningaloo Reef-Western Australia
As with all coral reef systems, the ecology of Ningaloo Reef is closely linked to water circulation which transport and disperse key material such as nutrients and larvae. Circulation on coral reefs may be driven by a number of forcing mechanisms including waves, tides, wind, and buoyancy effects. Surface waves interacting with reefs have long been known to dominate the currents on many coral r...

Preliminary results from biodiversity surveys in the deeper waters of Ningaloo Marine Park, Western Australia revealed that while much of the area is composed of sediments and rhodolith fields with low densities of macroepibenthos, locally dense and extensive filter feeding communities exist. They were distinctly dominated by demosponges, both in biomass and diversity. A subsample of dominant t...
متن کاملMulti Year Observations Reveal Variability in Residence of a Tropical Demersal Fish, Lethrinus nebulosus: Implications for Spatial Management
Off the Ningaloo coast of North West Western Australia, Spangled Emperor Lethrinus nebulosus are among the most highly targeted recreational fish species. The Ningaloo Reef Marine Park comprises an area of 4,566 km2 of which 34% is protected from fishing by 18 no-take sanctuary zones ranging in size from 0.08-44.8 km2. To better understand Spangled Emperor movements and the adequacy of sanctuar...
متن کاملNingaloo Reef: Shallow Marine Habitats Mapped Using a Hyperspectral Sensor
Research, monitoring and management of large marine protected areas require detailed and up-to-date habitat maps. Ningaloo Marine Park (including the Muiron Islands) in north-western Australia (stretching across three degrees of latitude) was mapped to 20 m depth using HyMap airborne hyperspectral imagery (125 bands) at 3.5 m resolution across the 762 km(2) of reef environment between the shore...
